Classic Car Financing

How Do I Apply to Finance My Dream Vehicle?

J.J. BEST BANC became the biggest name in collector car lending because our streamlined application process delivers low rates, long-term loans, and fast turnaround times—all under the guidance of our highly experienced classic car loan specialists.

Quick answer: Classic car financing turns your dream of owning a classic, collector, exotic, or specialty vehicle into a reality. Unlike traditional banks, J.J. Best Banc—the nation’s premier specialty lender for over 30 years—understands that these vehicles are passion investments, not daily drivers. Because these cars are uniquely valued based on rarity, modifications, and condition rather than just age, they require a specialized lending approach. Whether you are buying from a dealer, at a car show or online auction, or through a private seller, our expert loan officers provide the guidance needed to quickly connect you to the flexible funding program best suited for you, and get you behind the wheel of your dream vehicle.

Key takeaways:

  • Dedicated to the Classics: We exclusively finance passion vehicles—many of which increase in value over time—including pre-2006 classic and collector vehicles, plus newer vehicles such as many JDM, exotic and modern muscle cars. We do not finance daily driving vehicles or anything with less than 4 wheels.
  • The Industry Leader: Leveraging three decades of niche expertise, J.J. Best provides highly competitive rates and long-term options (up to 84 months) that standard auto lenders cannot match.
  • Universal Purchasing Power: We seamlessly structure and fund eligible purchases through private sellers, licensed classic car dealerships, and in-person or online auctions for borrowers in the lower 48 states.
  • Speed to Keys: Well-qualified applicants usually receive pre-approval within 5 minutes of loan review. In a perfect environment, funding can happen in as little as 6 hours, empowering you to bid or negotiate with cash-in-hand confidence.

The Application and Loan Process

Our straightforward application is designed to give you a quick decision. To secure your initial pre-approval, you only need to provide the first two items on this list.

Step 1: Initial Application Requirements

  1. Vehicle Details: The year, make, model, and VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) of your desired vehicle, if you have it.
  2. Borrower Details: Your anticipated down payment amount, employment information, monthly mortgage/rent expenses, and basic personal identification.

Step 2: Post-Approval Needs

After you are pre-approved, gathering these additional details will significantly speed up the final underwriting process and lead to faster funding:

  1. Seller Information: Specific seller information, indicating if the purchase is through a licensed dealer, private party or auction house. If buying from a dealer, sending your loan officer a purchase order or bill of sale makes everything more precise. If buying from a private party please make sure to provide the seller’s name, phone, address and email.
  2. Vehicle Information: A link to the listing site of the vehicle or VIN number if available. If the vehicle is significantly modified please inform your Loan Officer.
  3. Supporting Loan Documents: Every loan has different documentation requirements. At minimum, we will need a copy of your driver’s license and verification of your down payment funds. In many cases, we require proof of income.
  4. Insurance: An insurance binder is necessary for every loan and it is advisable that you set aside extra time to acquire the insurance you need. J.J. Best requires an insurance binder which is not the same as an insurance card. Reminder, our affiliate, J.J. Best Insurance Agency can arrange for your insurance needs to be met.

What to Know Before Applying

Classic and collector vehicles are evaluated differently than everyday cars. The details below help our underwriting team confirm that your loan structure, vehicle, and title are ready for funding.

What to Review Why It Matters for Your Loan
Vehicle Type JJ Best finances classic and collector, pre-2006, cars and trucks, plus newer exotic, replica, JDM, kit, performance, custom, modern muscle and specialty vehicles. We do not finance daily drivers, motorcycles, or commercial vehicles.
Purchase Source Documentation needs vary by source: Dealerships require purchase agreements; private party sales require careful title coordination; and auction purchases heavily benefit from advance pre-approval to establish your maximum bid.
Status, Condition, & Value The vehicle must be in running condition and capable of being titled. While the car or truck does not need to be in "show condition," it cannot be in disrepair, meaning neither the interior nor exterior can be in need of immediate restoration.
Down Payment Requirements A minimum 10% down payment of the base price (i.e. not the "out the door" price) is required for standard classics. In some cases a borrower is required to put more money down. Borrowers purchasing hot rods, kit cars, or heavily modified vehicles should have funds ready for up to a 30% down payment.
Insurance Requirements Standard auto insurance is not sufficient. Financed collector vehicles require active, specialized coverage such as Agreed Value Insurance (guaranteed value), full coverage, liability, and collision (listing J.J. Best Banc & Co. as loss payee) before funds are released.
Title & Lienholder Details To finalize your contractual obligations to J.J. Best, the vehicle must be registered and titled physically within the lower 48 states in the specific borrower's name, listing J.J. Best Banc & Co. as the official lienholder unless you are expressly instructed otherwise.

Classic Car Resources

Not all auto lending is created equal. Very few lenders even handle collector car financing and even fewer know the specialty car industry as we do. Because each car is truly unique, and understanding this collateral takes an experienced hand, dedicated and accessible service makes all the difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the credit requirements for a loan?

Generally, we require credit scores of 680 or higher with the FICO Auto Score 8, a tool that places extra emphasis on past auto loan payments. While we welcome co-applicants, the primary borrower must still meet this minimum threshold on their own to qualify for financing.

How to Ensure a Speedy Funding Process

Once your application is submitted, you will usually receive your approval decision via email. Your Loan Officer will call to go over the approval terms and options. When you are ready to proceed, reach out promptly to us with the seller’s name, address, phone number and email. To help our team fund your loan as quickly as possible, here is what to expect next:

  • The Document Checklist: Your Loan Officer will email you a DocuSign package and a checklist of required documents to upload through our secure online portal.
  • Dedicated Support: Your Loan Officer will work directly with you to keep the process organized. They will help review the vehicle, seller, and title details; confirm any remaining needs for approval; and coordinate insurance and lienholder details before proceeds are released. This support is especially valuable for private-party sales or fast-moving auction timelines!

Common Causes for Delay (And How to Avoid Them):

  1. Waiting on Insurance: Securing an Agreed-Value policy is the most common reason funding gets delayed. Do not delay your application to get insurance. If needed, we can seamlessly connect you with our affiliate, J.J. Best Insurance Agency, to secure the exact coverage required for funding.
  2. Missing Seller Information: To release funds, we must perform a collateral verification to ensure the vehicle exists and matches the title. To avoid delays, promptly provide your Loan Officer with the seller’s name, phone number, address, and email so we can initiate this verification immediately.
